How Self-Love is The Key to Unlocking Your Greatness
June 2020
So this book definitely took me out of my comfort zone as it discussed ideas like meditation, but overall I found this book to be very motivational and uplifting. Vex King opens his book with a brief history about his childhood, his experiences, and how these experiences shaped the internal dialogue and thoughts he had about himself, his career, life and more. King acknowledges that we each face difficulties and challenges throughout different times in our lives. He discuses how we naturally address these difficult moments, and what we can do to influence or change our outlook on each of these situations. He definitely makes it clear that in some cases, while we cannot change our exact circumstances, we have the ability to change our mindset and our attitude. If we can change how we look at a situation, then we might be able to influence the power that situation has on our life, good or bad.
I have always struggled with a couple things: worrying about what others think of me, worrying about things I do not have control over, and at times I have been known to think the worst of a situation. I have worked myself up into panic attacks more than I care to admit, and overtime I have found ways to cope with these stressful moments. I have grown and matured emotionally, and that has helped tremendously as I have figured out what I want in life, what I want to do, and what I want to be remembered for. So, some of the ideas I found in King’s book were ideas I have heard of, or practiced, before. But, I also found new ways to approach the things I worry about and how I can be more positive in the day-to-day moments of life.
King’s book not only focuses on mentality, attitude and emotions, but it also looks at practical steps for addressing things like goals, self care, people pleasing, family and friends, faith and more. If you don’t know the best method for tackling new goals, or you aren’t sure where to start when it comes to self care, or how to approach family members or friends that bring negativity and toxicity into your life, he gives you good tips for where to start. I think we can all agree that a life that’s completely free of negativity, gossip, and toxicity is hard to come by, but King gives you easy to follow steps that can point you in the right direction. I think we can also all agree that we each have goals and dreams, and I think we all strive to be the best we can be in each of the areas mentioned above. There is no one-size-fits-all approach to self care or achieving goals, just like there is no one-size-fits-all way to loose weight and get in shape. We have to know what works best for us, and adapt accordingly.
I am always striving to be the best version of myself mentally, physically, emotionally and spiritually. I am definitely a work in progress, always adapting to my environment and the situations I have been faced with. I know it won’t all be perfect, and neither will I, and I am learning to be okay with that. I won’t say it has been easy, or pretty, but it’s progress in the right direction. I look forward to utilizing some of the tips and tricks King offers in his book, especially in regards to goal setting and creating a more positive mentality! And I hope you will, too!
